A Darwinian Primer for a Digital World

It's time to evolve. I know you hate to hear it, but eventually, you're going to have to learn how to add attachments to your e-mail or pay your utility bill online. The fact is that we live in a digital world, and digital is the fashion statement that's here to stay. In fact, going digital means more than fashion; it's about survival.

With Digital Photography, Follow the Course of Fruit Flies

Few have realized the potential of digital photography. For example, with print photography, you had to print every photo on the roll. With digital photographs, deleting those unflattering photos of yourself is as simple as a click, drag, and drop.

If you're still not convinced to receive digital camera training, consider the fruit fly. Yes, you'd be lower on the photographic food chain than some fruit flies. University of Illinois professor Tim Tully recently discovered that certain fruit flies have a photographic memory. Luckily for you, digital cameras support a wide range of memory cards, so you can breathe easy knowing that fruit flies won't have one-up on you.

Digital Video Editing and Darwin Impersonators

Digital video (DV) editing offers unlimited possibilities for creating multimedia presentations and films. Using Maya, 3d Studio Max, and other CGI programs, you can add realistic computer generated elements to your film. With Avid Express Pro, you can edit your digital videos as if you were working on a big-budget Hollywood production.

Professor Charles Urbanowicz, a Cal State Chico Anthropology professor, played the role of Darwin for Charles Darwin Reflections - Part One: The Beginning and Charles Darwin Reflections : The Voyage - Part One. Urbanowicz recorded these impersonations on video, and after editing the digital clips, he distributed his lessons and principles online. The accompanying interactive media CD-Rom will soon be completed.

Digital Sound Recording - Will it Find a Long Lost Bird?

So you want to share your voice with the world? Maybe you should become a recording artist? With digital sound, your voice won't be doomed to seem as if it was recorded using a Victrola.
Cool Edit 2000, Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audition), and Sound Forge all offer digital sound editing solutions. With digital sound, you have more control over intensity, volume, file format, and noise reduction.

Digital sound recording may also help science find a near-extinct bird. Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) in the Pearl River area of Louisiana are on the lookout for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The woodpecker was last seen in the 1940s, but it has never been declared officially extinct. Though this bird may have suffered the brunt of natural selection there may still be hope, and digital sound recording may come to the rescue.

Ascending the Digital Media Food Chain

If you'd like to show that the Descent of Man is an oxymoron, you can climb up the technological food chain with digital media training. So even if your grandfather wasn’t a photographic genius and your mother didn’t have the voice of a recording diva, digital media training can help you leap ahead. Even Darwin would know that digital offers a whole new level of ascension.
