The Growth of Green
A recent study of 500 architects and modern architecture firms found that 9% have embraced sustainable design and green architecture wholeheartedly; one-third are starting to do so and two-fifths are interested but inexperienced in the green architecture movement.
If you want to combine an interest in the environment with a career as an architect, start your career training in drafting or design.
What is Green Architecture and Design?
A green building must be designed, built and operated in an environment-friendly, health-conscious and resource-efficient manner. Green architects incorporate sustainable designs into their architecture style in all of the following ways:
- Location. Green architects must protect natural resources and design buildings close to mass transit.
-
Design. Sustainable architecture styles incorporate shape and orientation, natural lighting and solar energy into building design.
-
Materials. The modern green architecture movement emphasizes recycled building and paving materials, furnishings, and mulches.
-
Water Efficiency. Green architects design buildings with energy-efficient water use and plumbing systems.
-
Health and Well-Being. Modern architecture recognizes that building design influences occupant health and productivity. Green architects consider interior air quality, lighting and the workspace of structures.
The Need for Green Architects
Successful projects rely on a team of architects who ensure that the building is designed as one integrated, sustainable system rather than multiple individual systems. A career in sustainable architecture can be a meaningful challenge that melds technology, engineering and sustainable practices.
Green Degrees and Modern Architecture Schools
If you are interested in becoming a sustainable architect, start with a degree at an architecture training program. Environmental studies, engineering and design programs can also be useful.
