What does music look like?

Every day, graphic design artists in the music industry grapple with this question, trying to portray the distinctive sound and style of a musician in album cover art, posters, and merchandise. This is a creative but tricky intersection of artistic expression. The best graphic design artists are able to create fine art while still promoting the artist and album.

Graphic Design in the Music Industry

Graphic designers create artwork for album covers, posters, stickers, t-shirts, and websites. Good graphic artists must create memorable images that are appropriate for the genre but still convey the artist's ideas behind the piece. Good graphic design artists also have strong communication skills and are able to discuss their work with musicians. Most graphic designers in the music industry have some type of formal graphic design training in the principles of design and color. A deeper understanding of music is also helpful.

Grammys for Graphic Design

Graphic design artists can earn Grammys for their contributions to the world of music. Previously known as the Best Album Cover award and Best Album Package, this premier award for musicians is now known as the Best Recording Package. Recent winners include:

  • 2006: Aimee Mann for The Forgotten Arm
  • 2005: Wilco for A Ghost Is Born
  • 2004: Ani DiFranco for Evolve

Graphic Design Training

A graphic designer in the music industry usually charges $50 to $75 per hour, but these positions are difficult to land and require graphic design training or a proven record of successful work in the graphic design field. If you enter a degree program in graphic design training or art and design, you will develop a portfolio to showcase your artistic style and expertise.
