A lovingly tended flowerbed, a soft mulch path, an understated fountain, a hidden corner of shade and a carefully placed bench: are you imagining the garden you wish you had? With spring upon us, why not turn your dream into a landscape you'll cherish for years to come?
There are three important principles of landscape architecture and gardening you should keep in mind:
Character
Your landscape's architectural style should reflect your personal taste, as well as features of the local region that give your garden its unique character. If you collect birdhouses, or love to cook with fresh herbs, incorporate these parts of your character into your garden. Use stone that is native to your region, and highlight any views of nature you have from your garden.
Connection
A successful landscape makes different spaces feel like they are all part of an overall plan. This requires you to plan each part of your garden carefully. Invite guests to explore the garden as a whole, with paths that wander fluidly throughout the area.
Change
No matter how well you plan and execute your design, Mother Nature has footprints of her own that will force you to adapt. Your plans should grow and change as your interests, needs, and garden do.
Find Your Personal Landscaping Style
A good garden will take time, hard work, and careful thought. Know what you want from a garden, and what your site offers you. Plan around your daily life and individual preferences and interests, and you can enjoy a meaningful garden of your own.
